Puff looks like a Sythe here, Handle like a Willie. He looks at His Pen representing the Blade, meaning opposition to Publications intended to cause Apocalypse. Jack bought String to suspend Puff, for me God made hooked Pens. Probably because of the Song about the Dragon hanging it's Head.
The Serpent inticed Eve to look at other images on the Ash once She'd noticed it. God had told their Spirit not to notice with their Human perception. The Ash Images are more obvious than the Birch that I saw later myself, so God moved them on before they picked up those Messages intended for their Spirit or unconscious Intelligence.
